Custodial Services

Custodial Services is responsible for cleaning more than 10,000,000 square feet in 148 buildings on campus daily. Custodians work on all three shifts, but the overwhelming majority operates on second shift (5:00pm-1:30am) and third shift (10:30pm-7:00 am. The normal day shift is comprised of less than 7 percent of our workforce and is usually limited to policing spills, stocking restrooms, and responding to emergency situations campus wide.

Our current workforce includes about 400 custodians, about one-third of which do not have English as their native language. In an effort to enhance our service to all our customers we are teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) on campus to these employees.

Our goal is to provide the best available service to our customers and a safe environment for our employees. Your help can help us provide even better service to you. Please do not assume that if you leave a note that the custodian can read it. They may have to take it back to their supervisor who can explain it or take other measures to respond to the situation.

We have a one-week custodial training program in which we teach proper cleaning and safety procedures. We know that there will be hazardous situations in labs that we have not covered. We ask that the lab managers use proper hazard cleanup procedures and the hazards be properly marked with the recognizable signs icons which do not depend on the custodian reading English for their own protection. If you have an unusual or potentially hazardous issue we ask that you call or email the custodial supervisor responsible for your building.
