The 936-acre University of Wisconsin-Madison campus has more than 380 buildings containing more than 17 million assignable square feet (ASF) of space and more than 25 million gross square feet (GSF). More than 120 of these buildings house major instructional and research facilities. More than 83 percent of these buildings are at least 25 years old and 79 percent are at least 35 years old.

The annual GPR funding for building maintenance is about $11 million. Considering the size of the campus and magnitude of the documented deferred maintenance (over $300 million) it is a continuous challenge to keep up with the demands.

To meet our objectives, the building maintenance activities are organized under the following four general programs:

  • Pro-active maintenance
  • Re-active maintenance
  • Rehabilitative maintenance
  • Deferred maintenance
